Gun Rights Headlines

Many anti-freedom politicians are using the Newtown shooting to exploit our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.  The shining star in all this has been our county sheriffs, elected by the people.  They are the supreme law enforcement in our counties.  Many have vowed to uphold their oaths of office, and will refuse to enforce any unconstitutional gun control laws that will only disarm the law-abiding.

The Basic Freedom Defense Fund (BFDF) was formed in February of 2013, immediately following the passage of several citizen-disarmament bills in the Colorado House of Representatives.  Opposition to these pieces of legislation ran ten-to-one, yet the people of Colorado were soundly ignored by politicians with an agenda. BFDF decided that, if those in power would not listen to the people, the people would need to speak more loudly.  And that those in power no longer should be.

The goal of BFDF is two-fold.  First, to educate the public about the freedoms they stand to lose and how to prevent further erosion.  Many people simply did not realize how egregious these bills were, how overreaching they were and how certain personal interactions would now be criminalized.  Worse, many felt that they were disenfranchised and powerless, that “you couldn’t fight City Hall”, even if their Second Amendment rights were in jeopardy.  They felt their options were limited to complying with unjust laws, uprooting their lives and fleeing to another state or accepting the mantle of criminal even though they had done nothing wrong.

BFDF’s second goal is to disabuse their fellow citizens of this notion by taking the bold step of exercising another right enshrined in the Colorado Constitution - Article XXI: Recall from Office.  While it would not undo the harm inflicted by the bills passed into law, BFDF elected to pursue recalling those responsible for the outrage to prevent them from doing further damage and to put them all on notice.  The men and women of Colorado will not be ignored, dismissed or talked down to and attempting to do so will have repercussions.

State Senator John Morse of Colorado Springs was quoted by the Durango Herald as saying, “The reality is, these folks don’t have a Second Amendment right to buy these guns…. I’m granting them the right, if you will….”  State Senator Evie Hudak callously told a rape survivor testifying against proposed self-defense restrictions that “actually statistics are not on your side even if you had had a gun. You said that you were a martial arts student, I mean person, experienced in tae kwon do, and yet because this individual was so large, he was able to overcome you, even with your skills…. if you would have had a gun, then he would have been able to get that from you and possibly use it against you….”

This attitude – this arrogance – from our elected officials cannot go unchallenged.  “We the people” have done nothing wrong and will not be treated as criminals for exercising our Constitutional rights and personal judgment.  We have the right to make our own decisions, to dispose of our personal property as we see fit and to defend ourselves and our families as we deem appropriate.  We neither need nor desire government to be our shepherd because we are not sheep.  We do not need to be protected from the world or ourselves.  We are perfectly capable of that on our own.

The men and women of Colorado – husbands, wives, sons, daughters, teachers and sheriffs – have said “No” to these infringements and we mean it.  We were blindsided and betrayed in the hopes of making our state a national example for gun control.  We hope to provide a different national example: one of resistance and a rolling back of unjust laws.  And we hope you are willing and able to join us in our fight.
