Second Amendment Sisters Denounce NAACP effort to curtail gun shows in FL

LAKEWOOD, TX. Second Amendment Sisters is appalled by the proposal of the NAACP to curtail gun shows in Duval County, Florida as a means of ending violence in the Jacksonville area. Criminals do not get their weapons at gun shows; law-abiding citizens participate in these events. Honest sales and purchases of firearms do not create violence

We have Hurricane Katrina fresh in our memories. One of the poignant images of the aftermath is that of an older woman being forced to surrender her revolver during the illegal confiscation of privately owned firearms. The hopeless look in her eyes as soldiers and police removed her means of defense gave us an indication of her fear as she was abandoned. Not only would she face the nights to come alone with her daughter and grandchildren at the mercy of armed thugs who were terrorizing the darkened neighborhoods, but also she had been rendered helpless by the very people she had thought were there to keep her safe.

We cannot expect others to provide all our protection. It is not possible. Florida has affirmed its belief in the primal right to self-defense. Second Amendment Sisters believes in this right. Like many women we believe in Choice: it is every woman’s, and every man’s, right to choose to defend their self, the lives of others, and their property. If you choose not to do so, that is your privilege, but we urge you not to deny that choice to others who would.

Gun shows are a legal, regulated venue for the exchange of firearms. Although they are regularly attacked by those whose end desire is the elimination of privately owned weaponry, the hysteria surrounding them has proved groundless.

Second Amendment Sisters strongly urges the mayor of Jacksonville, politicians of Duval County, and, most importantly, the citizenry of this city, county and state to reject this proposal. We suggest, instead, that you concentrate on the other proposals of the NAACP, many of which have great merit.

Second Amendment Sisters is a grassroots organization dedicated to preserving the individual basic human right to self-defense.
