Second Amendment Sisters, Today

Change is the single constant in the natural
world. Biologically, when an organism ceases to grow, it begins
to die. Like other vibrant organisms Second Amendment Sisters is
evolving.
Our truly grass roots organization was formed
in 1999 in protest of the Million Mom March, and staged two highly
successful counter marches against that Handgun Control, Inc. created
group. Today we are no longer reactionary, but, instead, have become
a proactive human rights group. Our credo “Self defense is a basic human right™” defines our mission.
Many Second Amendment activists begin in
the same fashion. They think, as did our five Founding Mothers,
that they and their rights are being threatened. They seek protection
within the framework of the Constitution. There they begin to learn
reality. Rights go hand in hand with obligations and responsibilities.
We understand that these rights we hold so
sacred in the United States come, not from a government, nor a document,
but from our Creator. We are born with them. Yet, are not the people
of Darfur also born with these rights of life and liberty? Are not
the citizens of Washington, D.C.?
Having a right and having the ability to
use that right are separate issues. Through time every individual
was born with these same rights we so joyously proclaim. How many
were able to exercise them? How many will be able to exercise them
in the future?
This is the mission of the Second Amendment
Sisters: to secure for our posterity the blessings of this unique
government. For it is women who hold responsibility for the generations.
We are the nurturers. We are the guardians. We are responsible for
our selves, our children, and grandchildren.
To keep our selves and our families safe
and secure we must protect the rights of everyone to be safe and
secure. Self defense is a basic human right™. We must protect that
right and extend it to all others.
We are doing this in a number of ways. One
is through influence with legislation and legislators. Another is
through conversion. We encourage women to become involved with the
shooting sports. As more and more women become gun-owners and users
ownership of firearms becomes more acceptable to the general population.
While we gratefully accept donations and
assistance from men, we think it is important that there be a female-only
organization within the pro-gun movement.* The MMM was designed
to proclaim a “feminine voice” against private ownership of firearms.
We are the feminine voice that answers such allegations.
We ask for tolerance. Choice is a cornerstone
of Women’s Issues. We urge women to honor the matter of Choice:
each of us can choose to defend or not defend, but we plead that
the Choice to do so not be taken from others.
